The Eden Alternative is an important part of life at Park Place Assisted Living. We were the first Assisted Living home in Kalamazoo County to be registered with the Eden Alternative and continue to be the only registered Assisted Living home in a five (5) county area.

The Eden Alternative was developed by Harvard educated William Thomas, M.D. He believed that many residents of Nursing Homes were not suffering from physical ailments but from feelings of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. In order to alleviate these three "plagues", Dr. Thomas founded the Eden Alternative. He believed that by bringing children, animals, and plants into the lives of residents, these "plagues" could be eliminated. Children and animals bring spontaneity, which reduces boredom; gives companionship, and minimizes loneliess. Residents have opportunities to give care which alleviates helplessness. Plants and gardening also allow nurturing for living things and further reduces helplessness. It gives them something to care for and care about.

Children and their role at Park Place
Children add a zest for life. Their friendship is seen through the heart as well as through the eyes. We have students from local area schools and church youth groups who visit us on a regular basis. We have KINDERMUSIK classes on a weekly basis. In the Kindermusik class, newborns to toddlers come to class with mommy or daddy and sit in a circle with the residents. The interaction is magical for babies and residents alike, allowing them a chance to build relationships because they are in continuing contact.
Children are the hands by which we take hold of heaven. Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no critisisms.
- Henry Beecher Ware - George Eliot
Pets at Park Place
When you visit you'll surely meet some of our most popular residents: Summer and Coco, our K-9 companions, Sweetie, Chester and Sassy our feline friends; Baby and Samson our cockatiels, a bird aviary filled with colorful feathered friends plus a plethora of fish who wish to remain anonymous. Their antics brighten everyone's day and make Park Place a nicer place to live and work.
Gardens and Plants at Park Place
Park Place Assisted Living supports the Eden Alternative concept by providing our residents with gardening opportunities in our raised flower beds, perennial gardens and caring for our many houseplants. Our well manicured lawns and gardens have a beautiful fountain that adds a lovely touch and an inviting gazebo that welcomes visitors to sit in its shade during warm weather.
